Scenery & Walking

Gayle Mill

Built as a spinning mill back in 1784 and converted to a sawmill and joiners in 1879, Gayle Mill is one of the oldest structurally unaltered cotton mills in the UK. Powered by an impressive Williamson water turbine. It is open for guided tour every Thursday from 10am to 4pm.

Ribblehead Viaduct

Gorgeous, stunning and scenic. With its 24 massive stone arches standing 32 metres above the moor, this is undoubtedly the most impressive structure on the Settle to Carlisle Railway. A monumental construction well worth seeing whatever the weather.

Aysgarth Falls

A picturesque set of low, triple-flight waterfalls carved out by the River Ure over a one-mile stretch on its descent into Wensleydale. Surrounded by woodland and farmland, most falls and views are easy to access with care. A peaceful place to walk with plenty of benches to enjoy a picnic.

St Margaret's Church, Hawes

A beautiful Grade II listed parish church in the heart of Hawes, St Margaret's is easily accessible on foot. See and admire its stunning stained-glass windows and famous carved pews with mouse motif by Robert Thompson. It's literally a five minute walk from our cottage and not to be missed.

Wensleydale Creamery

Situated in the market town of Hawes, this award-winning tour is the ultimate experience for cheese lovers! Learn from master cheesemakers, whose handcrafted skills have been passed down over 1000 years. A great place to visit (even when it’s raining) for adults and kids.
